The Sammy D Foundation was formed in 2008 following the tragic loss of Sam Davis from a one punch assault.
On Sunday, 4 May 2008, the life of 17-year-old Sam Davis was tragically cut short when he fell victim to a one-punch attack. A fiercely loyal young man with a natural ability to form friendships, Sam made a huge impact on those around him. From an early age, he demonstrated integrity and strong values, standing up for those being bullied and treating others with respect. Sam achieved many notable successes, but none shone brighter than his talent and passion for sport. Playing state soccer, indoor and outdoor cricket, and indoor netball from a young age, Sam excelled in every sport he tried.
At 15, after many years of soccer, Sam switched to Aussie Rules Football with his friends. It was during this season that he discovered his true sporting love, quickly developing a passion for the game and excelling as a young footballer. Despite playing only 10 games that season, Sam was runner-up in the Best and Fairest and earned a place in the Southern Under-16 Team of the Year. His talent was soon recognised by South Adelaide Football Club, who recruited him for the following season.
Sam’s vibrant personality, infectious character, and zest for life meant he packed so much into his short time. From a young age, he was always busy — walking earlier than most, riding his bike without trainer wheels before the age of two, and eagerly seeking new adventures. Forever the entertainer, Sam lived life to the fullest, as if he knew it might be cut short.
When faced with the decision about organ donation, Sam’s parents knew exactly what he would have wanted. With a healthy, well-functioning body, they were determined that his passing would not be in vain.
Following the devastating loss of Sam, his parents, Nat Cook and Neil Davis, founded the Sammy D Foundation with the aim of equipping young people with the skills to prevent such tragedies from happening again.
